John Brooks and Hertha Berlin were far from their best on the defensive end on Saturday, but the U.S. Men’s National Team defender found a way to make an impact on the attacking end in the final match before the international break.
Brooks scored his team’s second goal of the match on Saturday as Hertha Berlin slumped to a 4-2 defeat to Cologne. The goal was Brooks’ first of the season as he prepares to join the USMNT for World Cup qualifying.
It didn’t take long for Brooks and Hertha Berlin to fall behind, as Yuya Osako fired Cologne ahead just six minutes in. Forward Anthony Modeste added a brace of his own to that lead, giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
A Vedad Ibisevic penalty kick brought Hertha Berlin back into the match before Modeste completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute. Brooks headed home his goal six minutes later, heading home a corner kick from Vladimir Darida for the final goal of the match.
