He may have missed out on a midweek match, but John Brooks certainly made his presence known over the weekend.
The Hertha Berlin defender scored a goal while helping maintain a clean sheet in his side’s 2-0 win over Augsburg. The performance saw Brooks earn honors as SBI Americans Abroad Player of the Week recognition to go with the three points.
Brooks’ day started on the attacking end, where he found Hertha Berlin’s first goal of Saturday’s win. The U.S. Men’s National Team defender was in the right place at the right time to deflect home a shot from Valentin Stocker for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. It was all Hertha needed thanks to Brooks’ play on the defensive end, as the entire backline kept Augsburg at bay for all 90 minutes to secure a shutout win.
The goal and clean sheet combo earned Brooks recognition, beating out fellow goalscorer Eric Lichaj, CONCACAF Champions League finalist Omar Gonzalez and Hamburg star Bobby Wood for this week’s honors.
What did you think of Brooks’ performance? Which American Abroad stood out to you this weekend?
